15 min read

Telesoftas UAB, which initiated its operations within the business incubator of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) almost two decades ago, has now emerged as one of the most renowned and innovative IT service companies, not only within Lithuania but also across the entire region. The company’s leadership, in collaboration with its dedicated team, is consistently shaping a visionary approach to future operations, showcasing unwavering confidence in Lithuania’s potential for success within the IT sector.

Emerging from university hallways

Over the span of 18 years, one individual’s initial idea has blossomed into Telesoftas UAB, an ingenious and cutting-edge IT services company that collaborates with prominent telecommunications firms worldwide. Today, this international enterprise predominantly concentrates on telecommunications and communication systems. Additionally, it engages in activities within the financial sector, the integration of artificial intelligence, and, as of 2020, has embarked on venturing into the realm of health-tech.

Algirdas Stonys, the Director of Telesoftas UAB, recollects how his journey commenced during his first year as a bachelor’s student. Initially working as a freelance programmer, his endeavours gradually expanded, prompting him to assemble a team of professionals, ultimately leading to the establishment of the company. The inaugural colleagues, some of whom still play vital roles within the company, were classmates and dormitory neighbours of A. Stonys.

Reflecting on the company’s inception, Stonys reveals that selecting a suitable name wasn’t without its challenges. Initially desiring to name it Telesoft, they soon discovered that a company bearing the same name already operated in the USA. After considering the recommendations of the State Lithuanian Language Commission, the current name of the company was adopted—a name that is distinct and reflects the company’s cherished roots.

From its origins in Lithuania, this IT solutions company has now expanded its reach, boasting offices not only in Kaunas, Vilnius, Klaipėda, and even Abuja, Nigeria, but also in strategic locations such as Zurich, Dubai, and San Francisco. A team of 250 professionals across these cities dedicates themselves to delivering innovative solutions to clients on a daily basis.

Every project holds equal significance

The software developed by Telesoftas UAB is embraced by 1.1 billion individuals across the globe. The company predominantly exports its services to foreign markets, notably Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. Meanwhile, engagement with Lithuanian clients contributes to only around 10 percent of their overall activities. Nonetheless, as per the Head of the company, the team values all partners and executed projects with equal significance.

Among the Lithuanian firms that have availed themselves of Telesoftas UAB services are Tele2, Akropolis, Sanitex, and more. Simultaneously, the Lithuanian-founded enterprise collaborates with major international counterparts, including the American technology giant Viavi, the British television network BBC Two, and the German leader in mobile tool rental, Kurt Köning.

The field of IT specialists boasts numerous triumphant product developments. These include UCLPartners project that helped hospital networks manage patient flow and overcome challenges, as well as the Perlas Go app for convenient bill payment. In parallel, a specialized software tool tailored for the Lithuanian police was showcased by the Telesoftas UAB team at the global EXPO 2020 exhibition in Dubai. This tool aimed to optimize officers’ routes and expedite their response times.

“We have also executed numerous smaller, potentially less recognized non-commercial initiatives, such as the psychological aid app Pagalba sau (Self-Help) or the autism community platform Lietaus vaikai (Children of the Rain). Of course, we garner global recognition primarily for our engagements within the telecommunications sphere. We have collaborated with the foremost operators worldwide. However, I find equal satisfaction in all our endeavours,” affirms the Head of the company pioneering the latest technologies.

The client functions like an organism

According to Stonys, a significant portion of the company’s sales is generated through recommendations circulating within its network of partners. This enduring collaboration is underpinned by Telesoftas UAB approach, which underscores the importance of not only crafting essential software but also considering the advantages the rendered services bring to partners.

“Much like we prioritize the well-being of our employees, the contentment of our clients holds equal significance. We consider whether the product we have created will bring them additional income, help them save costs, or optimise their operations. We perceive the client as an organism that occasionally requires gentle guidance or steady companionship. Our effort is geared towards fostering the well-being of the entire entity,” states the founder of the IT solutions company when discussing the nuances of partner collaboration.

Furthermore, Telesoftas UAB actively engages not solely with business partners but also with academic institutions. To this day, the company sustains a collaborative relationship with KTU, where it initiated its activities within the business incubator as well as the university’s academic, research, and student communities. This IT sector enterprise has also formalized cooperation agreements with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Vytautas Magnus University, and Klaipėda University.

Daily demand for innovation

The IT sector is in a constant state of rapid evolution. Therefore, when asked about the daily challenges faced by specialists at Telesoftas UAB and what aids their ability to keep up with global digital transformations, Stonys underscores that singling out a field untouched by its own set of issues would likely be an impossible task.

“It may appear to some that the IT field is without challenges. However, we too encounter difficulties, such as the persistent shortage of specialists and the imperative to train them, the pursuit of optimal enhancements to working conditions while ensuring employee well-being, matters concerning company structure and management, the empowerment of individuals, and the lucidity and openness of processes within the company. Each challenge requires a different technological solution. Consequently, our sector remains a dynamic arena of perpetual challenges and transformations,” reflects the interviewee.

Contemplating the future of the company under his guidance, Stonys emphasizes that in order to sustain competitiveness, it’s crucial not only to introduce innovations to clients but also to integrate them into the company’s internal operations. Thus, the Telesoftas UAB team employs novel solutions offered to partners in their own endeavours. The company’s IT professionals utilize the aforementioned tool crafted for the Lithuanian police to strategize business trips and expenses. Moreover, the company aspires to further broaden its scope and effect global changes.

“Currently, the software we develop streamlines networks and ensures connectivity. But we hope to go even further. Concurrently, we seek to infuse more happiness into people’s lives, enhance their well-being, and encourage positive change in the world. In doing so, we align ourselves with sustainable development objectives, striving to ensure that our initiatives foster self-sustaining communities, businesses, and products. We remain mindful not only of nature but also of the enduring viability of businesses,” teaches the Head of Telesoftas UAB.

The IT sector awaits a breakthrough

The Head of a globally operating software development company holds an optimistic outlook for the future of the IT sector in Lithuania. Despite Lithuania’s traditional identity as a country focused on services and production, a discernible trend toward an upswing in the number of professionals engaging in information technology is evident. The INFOBALT association alone unites around 15,000 experts. According to Stonys, it’s plausible that within a few years, Lithuania may witness the emergence of a unicorn – a company valued at over a billion dollars.

“We are at a turning point, having gained considerable experience and witnessing the rise of good specialists alongside the necessary know-how. While we might lack firms with substantial capital, our potential is substantial, offering a prime opportunity for exploitation. Hence, the emphasis lies on congregating within clusters and communities, synergizing the insights of diverse specialists to forge robust and profitable businesses. The next three years hold promise as a breakthrough period for Lithuania. I also discern that mere programming proficiency is no longer sufficient; the ability to glean insights from data holds paramount significance. So whoever will possess greater data and will make the right insights from its analysis will win,” says the interviewee.

Telesoftas UAB has also actively engaged with several IT clusters operating within the country. Stonys recollects a unique invitation to join the Rocket Cluster organization, uniting representatives from various engineering fields. The IT professional notes that his company had never before encountered the opportunity to collaborate with manufacturing enterprises.

The architects of innovative technologies find contentment in their involvement with the Rocket Cluster since 2020. Together with fellow members, they have embarked on numerous significant initiatives. Noteworthy among these is a project tailored for seaweed cultivators, aimed at facilitating the calculation of optimal productivity and the development of plans for cultivation, harvesting, drying, and marketing. According to Stonys, the allure of the Rocket Cluster lies in the fusion of designers, builders, and programmers working cohesively to create tangible products that have a substantial impact on the world.
